The geography takes some getting used to. The river bends so hard around New Orleans that the West Bank lies mostly south of downtown, and parts of Algiers sit further east than the French Quarter across the water. Three crossings tie it to the east bank: the Crescent City Connection from Gretna and Algiers into the Central Business District, the Huey P. Long Bridge upriver between Bridge City and Harahan, and the Algiers ferry to the foot of Canal Street. On this side the spine is the Westbank Expressway, running from the bridge past Gretna, Harvey and Marrero toward Westwego, lined with shopping centers and restaurants — plenty of ordinary, busy places for a first coffee.

If your nearest town reads New Orleans but you live here, say Algiers on your profile, because the town name alone will not.
- Belle Chasse
- Down LA-23 in Plaquemines Parish, beside the naval air station's joint reserve base, so service members and reservists are part of the mix. A small place in its own right, with the bank's bigger pool beginning a short drive north around Terrytown and Gretna.

- Further afieldWest on US-90, Houma and bayou country is about an hour away; the Northshore lies beyond the city and over the lake, on the Slidell page; and Baton Rouge is roughly an hour and a half up I-10, best kept for a planned trip.
